Did You Know, that Tanzanite was discovered by a Maasai herder after a wildfire?

Tanzanite: Born from fire, found by fate.
The Tanzanite Discovery Story starts in 1967 in the Merelani Hills near Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania—the only place on Earth it’s found.
Legend has it a Maasai herder named Ali Juuyawatu stumbled across shimmering blue-violet stones scattered on the ground after a wildfire swept through the dry grasslands.
The blaze, sparked by lightning or human activity, had burned away the surface, exposing and heat-treating the rough zoisite crystals below.
This natural furnace turned the brownish stones into the dazzling blue-violet gems we know today. Ali collected them, not knowing he’d found something new to science.
Word spread, and prospectors soon flocked to the area. A year later, Tiffany & Co. caught wind of it, named it “tanzanite” after its homeland, and marketed it as a rare alternative to sapphire.

Geologists say its formation—tied to tectonic chaos 585 million years ago—is a one-off fluke, and with the mines depleting, it might vanish in a generation. It’s a gem born of fire, earth, and a herder’s chance discovery—pure magic.
Tanzanite is a rare and captivating gemstone with a fascinating history, unique properties, and reputed metaphysical benefits.
